Preserving Culture
and Heritage
The Samula Heritage Festival is dedicated to preserving and promoting Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage by showcasing traditional arts, crafts, and performances. Our primary objective is to create a platform that celebrates the island’s vibrant history and diverse cultural expressions, while fostering community engagement and international recognition. Through this festival, we aim to protect endangered cultural practices, support local artisans and performers, and provide immersive experiences that connect both locals and visitors to the depth of Sri Lanka's artistic heritage.
Glimpse of Samula 2024
Held from the 2nd to the 4th of August 2024
Day 01: Ritual Dance Showcases
On the first day of Samula 2024, the festival will highlight Sri Lanka’s ancient healing rituals with performances like the Kohomba Kankariya, a sacred dance known as the birthplace of the Kandyan Dance tradition. Audiences will also witness an excerpt from the Udekki Thowil Ritual, showcasing rhythmic drumming used for spiritual and healing purposes. Additionally, the Pantheru Ritual & Rites will be performed, displaying the power of rhythmic instruments to invoke blessings and protection.

Day 02: Traditional Kandyan Dance Forms
The second day focuses on the Kandyan dance heritage, featuring an excerpt of the Hewisi Rituals, a traditional musical performance that accompanies temple rituals and is key to the Kandyan dance lineage. The day will provide deep insights into how these sacred dance forms evolved and remain integral to Sri Lanka’s cultural identity.

Day 03: Cross-Country Traditional Dance Performances
The final day offers a vibrant exploration of dance forms from across Sri Lanka. Highlights include the Kataragama Tradition of Nadaswaram Music, renowned for its association with religious festivals, and an excerpt from the Devol Maduwa Ritual Sathpattini Yagaya, a sacred dance connected to healing rituals in southern Sri Lanka. These performances represent the diverse dance traditions across the island, bringing the festival to a powerful close.
Celebrating Sri Lanka’s Artisans
The Hands of Heritage showcase highlights the craftsmanship and artistry of Sri Lanka’s most talented artisans and craftspeople. This initiative aims to preserve and promote the island's rich artisanal traditions, from intricate weaving and pottery to the delicate carving and jewelry that reflect centuries of cultural heritage. Each piece tells a story of skill passed down through generations, offering festival-goers a unique opportunity to witness traditional crafts in their purest form. Visitors will have the chance to engage with artisans, learn about their techniques, and purchase authentic, handcrafted items that embody the spirit of Sri Lankan heritage.
At Samula 2024, we enriched the audience's experience through interactive educational sessions held before each evening performance. These discussions, demonstrations, and workshops offered a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical significance of the rituals and performances. Participants had the unique opportunity to engage with experts, learn about traditional dance forms, and explore the artistry behind the performances. Whether through hands-on activities or insightful conversations, these sessions provided an immersive learning experience, allowing attendees to appreciate the heritage and craftsmanship presented on stage with greater depth and context.
